June 17,2006Okay, so the Purple editor-in-chief is taking the fam on vacation this week. Our philosophy has been to provide 1 or 2 weekly updates with detail rather than daily rants for the sole purpose of driving site volume. I know we have the world on the edge of its seat each week, waiting for our pearls of wisdom. Thus, it pains me to disappoint the legions of loyal site readers. Alas, let me give you some parting thoughts for the week. Chew on these morsels of wisdom until we meet again.
1. The AMA proposal to create a “fat tax” doesn’t drive up the cost of fast food enough to make it undesirable. So, what is it? It’s another excuse for a government program. Trust me, the world knows fast food is bad, but damn it, it tastes good. No public service message will discourage me from my burger and fries. Oh, and by the way, it’s a massive violation of liberty.
2. Soccer, er football, rocks. I’ve never understood the competition between American football and traditional football. I love them both. Shame the overrated Americans continue to disappoint. The refusal of many Americans to embrace the beautiful game is simply a metaphor for American culture at-large. Not necessarily good or bad, but definitely a metaphor with implications for our future. More on this later. A Purple Prediction – the Americans played poorly, but not as much as the Czechs are good. Look for the Czechs to make a serious run.
3. Capitol Hill debate of late has centered on the marriage amendment and resolutions supporting the troops. Is the country that well off that these are the priorities? I’ve already gone off on the marriage amendment. God bless the troops – no matter your stand on the war. Their job is harder than it has ever been because of the new world order on the move. However, these votes play no role in advancing a compelling national agenda.
Adieu.
