Birdshot Earshot
February 18, 2006

PurpleThink chose not to take the low road this week. Vice President Cheney’s accidental shooting of friend and campaign contributor Harry Whittington was easy-pickins. Surely, a political blog site wishing to make a name for itself would stay way from such an obvious story – right?

Well, the real news story evolved as the main story devolved into a media henhouse. It's an all-out avian flu pandemic in Washington. The White House Press Corps ran around like quail with their heads shot off, moaning about not getting the official story first. The chickenhawks on capital hill salivated at the chance to get congressional leadership to comment on the issue. The golden egg came from Nancy Pelosi who saw this story as a “metaphor for everything wrong with this administration.” In a press conference, Senator Harry Reid and Pelosi said, “There’s probably a very simple answer to it, but…” Woh, stop there!

Point is, there is nothing in this story that affects you or me. Metaphors don’t make policy decisions, and “simple answers” don’t require press conferences. Fact is, Cheney is secretive and Bush is not very media savvy. Is this news to anyone?

PurpleThinkers see the real metaphor. This whole story is a metaphor for political divisiveness, exacerbated by the birdbrains in the media. The press believes any politician’s life event is fair game. These clay pigeons are then lobbed toward political adversaries who are all too happy to shoot. Whether it’s taking pot-shots at Clinton and Lewinsky or Cheney and The Quail Hunt, we’re all fed a steady diet of poisoned seed.

We see this downward spiral continuing. Like swallows returning to Capistrano, the media cannot resist their regular migration. Take a look at the following CNN headlines from the not-too-distant future.
